Data

In addition to the Swarm datasets, the primary dataset to be used for this project is data from the Canadian Array for Real-time Investigations of Magnetic Activity (CARISMA). During the intervals of some of the Swarm-CARISMA conjunctions, secondary data sets which provide value-added input to support the scientific goals, especially in relation to examining the excitation of the IAR, may also be valuable from the NASA Van Allen Probes and NASA THEMIS missions from higher altitude locations on the same conjugate field lines being sampled by the Swarm-CARISMA conjunctions.

During perigee passes, data from the ESA-NASA Cluster satellites which is also categorized as secondary value-added data, may also be similarly valuable during high altitude conjugate perigee passes. The team will also conduct analysis of Field Aligned Currents (FAC) derived from the constellation of AMPERE satellites, as well as from networks of all sky cameras, and from mapping magnetic bays from magnetometer arrays as well as application of independent component analysis (ICA).

The team has also been provided with access to historical data from the Canadian Lightning Detector Network (CLDN), and can gain access to additional data upon request. The PI institution (U. Alberta) is also a host of a detector from the World-Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), and hence we have access to WLLN data on request. Note that although the team has access to these data sets, the CLDN and WLLN do however impose usage restrictions which prevent the team from making this data publicly available to other third party users.
